I was shelling these broad (fava) beans to put in the felafel I was making for dinner when Tilly piped up that she wanted to help me. My first answer was no, she wouldn't be able. Then, rethinking it, I said she could help shell the outer pods, but that I would have to do the inner tough skins as it would be too tricky for her.
Well, that wasn't good enough for Tilly, she insisted on doing it all. And, of course, she was perfectly fine at it. So we spent an enjoyable ten minutes preparing the beans together.
And my big lesson of the day? Apart from realising that Tilly is more capable than I give her credit for?
There is no point going to the trouble of making it for them anymore. It's just not going to happen. I've tried enough times now. It's time to let it go.
Even though tonight's incarnation was delightful with fried eggplant and tabbouleh wrapped up in pita. Oh yum!
